Prague Culture and Entertainment
While just visiting the city of Prague and its abundance of tourist sites is certainly enough to fill your senses for weeks, let alone the few days you'll probably have when you visit, you might also want to take advantage of the city's many cultural and other activities while you're in town. While Prague itself, with it's Baroque palaces, Gothic towers and abundant statuary is like one big open-air museum, the city is also home to many art museums and galleries you might want to visit. It also boasts great opera and symphony performances that you might want to take advantage of at their affordable prices. Here's a list of just some of the things you can do in Prague.
MuseumsPrague's National Gallery is a collection of museums featuring permanent and temporary exhibitions of everything from the works of Master Theodoric in the Convent of St. Agnes to Matthias Braun's Baroque sculptures in the Schwarzenberg Palace to French Impressionism in Veletrzni Palace. Whether you like Old Masters or Kupka, you can find something to suit your taste here.
The National Technical Museum highlights the technical developments in various technical fields that have taken place in the territory of today’s Czech Republic. If you like glass, textiles and other decorative items, visit the Museum of Decorative Arts. Glass, porcelain and fashion dominate this museum's collections. |

Opera, Ballet and Classical Music Concerts
Prague is a city of music filled with music lovers. Mozart loved Prague and spent lots of time here. In fact, the world premier of the opera Don Giovanni took place at Prague's Estates Theater in 1787, with Mozart himself conducting the house orchestra.
The quality of opera and symphony performances in Prague is quite good, while the prices are still very affordable. The venues are fantastic, too, so treat yourself to an earful of Dvorak, Smetana, and Mozart in one of the National Theater's venues. Or go hear the Czech Philharmonic at the Rudolfinum or the Prague Symphony at the Municipal House (Obecni Dum).
Seeing any Mozart opera is always a treat at the Estates Theater. It's especially nice to see Don Giovanni there, as the world premier of that opera took place in the Estates in 1787, with Mozart himself conducting the house orchestra.

RestaurantsCzech cuisine has a reputation for being heavy and bland, but these days Prague is becoming known as a place with great restaurants featuring a variety of international cuisine. Now, in addition to hearty Czech roasted duck and dumplings, you can treat yourself to great Asian, Sardinian, Italian, Thai and other types of food. Click here for some tips on places to eat, or check out my guidebook for a more thorough listing of Prague's best restaurants.
Paddle BoatsOne of the best ways to keep cool in the summer is to take a paddle boat ride on the Vltava river. They are available for rent on the Island Zofin near the National Theater or by the Charles Bridge (on the Old Town side of the river).
