Happy Easter and Happy Passover From Prague

Spring is Springing!

Spring is springing in Prague, and we’re all itching to get out after a very long, very cold and very gray winter here.

Easter weekend has always been a big deal in the Czech Republic, if not so much for the religious significance as the beginning of spring, of rebirth and renewal after the dark days of winter and a return to more light, longer days and weekends at the cottage.

The "Real" Easter?

Easter Monday (as the Czechs say, the “real” Easter, for on the third day, He rose again according to Scripture), has always been a state holiday here. So naturally with the weather warming up, it has been a tradition to go somewhere on Easter weekend – either to the near abroad or to one’s cottage – to enjoy the great outdoors again - finally.

And a few years ago, Good Friday was made an official holiday, too, so now it’s a four-day weekend, and – well, why not take Thursday off, too?! It’s a beautiful day today, as the picture above taken this morning in my neighborhood shows, and the streets and sidewalks are also showing all the signs more typical of a Prague summer weekend – they have emptied out.

Passover Will Be Celebrated in Prague, Too

Yesterday also marked the start of Passover, and that holiday, too, will be celebrated by many of us. Happily, it will also be celebrated by some here in Prague, as well, as this country’s Jewish community strives to revive itself – a kind of rebirth for which Passover is also a symbol.

Meanwhile on Earth 1

And, on an more earthly level, I’m of course hoping for the renewal of the tourist season as I look forward to welcoming more visitors to Prague and introducing them to this wonderful city!
